 Ward Leonard Controller – History, Principle And Uses

The principle

Ward Leonard Speed Control is one of the most important methods, comprised of a DC motor fed by its own DC generator.

Ward Leonard Controller The Ward Leonard System usually consists of an AC motor, a DC generator, a constant voltage  exciter, a shunt DC motor and a field variable resistor. The variation in the armature voltage  controls the speed of the DC motor through the resistor in the genset.

 Direct current is fed to the genset’s field windings and the drive is obtained via the exciter driven  from the genset’s shaft.

 Regulating the generator shunt, a speed of 10-to-1 range can be obtained for a 360W output and  higher. The general safe limit is 10 to 1, even though 15 to 1 can be obtained for smaller speed  ranges.

The biggest strength of Ward Leonard Controller is that it is really stable. Regulating the speed between no load and maximum load at any setting is up to 10 percent, varying with regard to the equipment’s specifications.

Ward Leonard Controller has been applied in numerous industrial contexts with notable success in power planers and particular lifts and in grinders with outputs of 360 W, ¾ kW and 11/2 kW.

Ward Leonard Controller Over Time

This type of drive was introduced by Harry Ward Leonard in 1891. The US Navy adopted the drive system at the beginning of 20th century. The drive also found its application in mine passenger lifts. At the Paris World Exposition in 1900 there was a problem with solving the moving sidewalk problem, which was successfully fixed by the Ward Leonard Controller.

In World War I the system was applied to railway engines and in World War II to anti-aircraft radars. Even though Ward Leonard drive has been widely used for more than a century, the emergence of thyristor drives somewhat replaced Ward Leonard in certain uses. Thyristor system offered smooth and steady speed control with torque consistency.
