Should You Buy a New or a Refurbished Marine Diesel Engine

Should You Buy a New or a Refurbished Marine Diesel Engine

When your purring marine engine starts rumbling and grinding, the beast might just be beyond repair. If you’re less fortunate and your block is completely gone, you’re looking at several options: rebuild, buy a refurbished engine or buy a completely new one.

Each of these options has its ups and downs, but the first thing boat owners look at is the price. However, you should not make that decision based on price alone. Depending on the age of your engine and where you used it, rebuilding it, for example, might be out of the question. On the other hand, a new engine could have a hefty price tag. In this article, the leading San Diego ship repair expert breaks down each choice.

The Condition of the Engine

Experts advise that if your engine is older than 10 years or was used mostly in salt water, rebuilding may not pay off in the long run due to accumulated corrosion on its components. There’s simply no way to know the condition of some parts of the engine like the cooling passages. The same could be said for engines using raw water for cooling.

However, if the engine was used in freshwater or features a closed cooling system, rebuilding might be a viable and most affordable option, especially if the engine is not that old.

Rebuilding an Engine

Typically, if the engine meets all the prerequisites mentioned above and the damage is too far gone for a simple repair, your best choice is to rebuild the engine. It means exactly what it sounds like: an expert technician will completely take the engine apart, remove the damaged parts, clean the rest and rebuild it back up using brand new parts and following the original specs. In most cases, the engine has to be taken out of the boat during the procedure, save for some smaller repairs like replacing the cylinder heads.

What about Refurbished Engines?

Refurbished engines are usually the best and most affordable option when rebuilding or repair is out of the question. With refurbished engines, you usually have a choice of getting a long or a short block. This means that you will only get the essentials of the engines without parts like fuel supply system, starter or alternator, but these are all components you probably already kept from your old setup.

Refurbished engines are completely taken apart and rebuilt using new genuine parts according to manufacturer specifications in factories. However, the warranty for these engines is shorter than the warranty for a new engine. The warranty usually lasts anywhere from 18 months to two years. Additionally, the installation has to be performed by a licensed technician at a reputable San Diego ship repair company.

Choose a Reputable San Diego Ship Repair Expert

Whichever option you choose, make sure to only hire a licensed technician to perform the repairs and installations. Otherwise, you might risk damaging fragile components which might require even costlier repairs.
