How Many Fuel Injectors Are There in a 6.6l Duramax Diesel Engine?

How Many Fuel Injectors Are There in a 6.6l Duramax Diesel Engine?

Fuel injectors are systems that introduce diesel fuel into an internal combustion engine. There are 8 injectors in a V8 Duramax engine. The only weakness of these excellent engines is that they sometimes suffer from fuel injection malfunctions that require repair. Knowing certain details about your engine models, such as how many injectors are contained within a 6.6 Duramax, will help you keep them in better condition.

In previous articles, we explained where you can find first-rate 6.6l duramax fuel pump repair in San Diego, what constitutes high mileage in Duramax engines, what the horsepower differences across Duramax models are, and how to choose the top diesel engine today.

Now we will tell you about a few crucial traits of Duramax engines, and how taking care of them can help you get the most out of your diesel-powered vehicle.

How does a Duramax diesel engine work?

6.6l Duramax engines belong to the family of General Motors V8 engines, and operate in a similar principle. After you turn the key in the ignition and press the accelerator, fuel pumps start to pull the fuel out of the tank, dragging it through the fuel filters, and introducing it into the injector nozzles.

The nozzles then begin spraying the pressurized fuel directly into a delivery tube. The high pressures used will automatically heat up the air within the engine. At this point, the fuel, the air, and the fire all meet inside the cylinder.

This causes combustion to spread from the small amount of diesel fuel that's placed under pressure in the pre-combustion chamber, and reach the fuel and the air in the main combustion chamber.

Do Duramax have glow plugs?

For the aforementioned combustion to take place, the diesel engine must be warm enough to allow combustion. This isn’t an issue in normal weather conditions, but in lower temperatures (-40 degrees Fahrenheit, or less) it can pose a problem. This is where glow plugs come in.

Glow plugs are special components that are purpose-built to enable diesel engines to heat up quickly in cold weather. All diesel engines have them, and 6.6l Duramax engines are no exception. That being said, Duramax engines can start without glow plugs.

What kind of oil does a 6.6 Duramax take?

The legendary reliability of Duramax engines can be further increased through diligent, yet simple, maintenance. When it comes to diesel engines, regular oil changes are one of the main factors in how long an engine will last and how well it will perform.

Consult your owner’s manual. It will tell you the total oil capacity of your Duramax engine, as well as the preferred oil types. If you don’t have an owner’s manual, or you can’t access it, keep in mind you can get a new one from your local dealership’s parts department.

At the end of the day, using a high-quality synthetic oil is critical to ensuring your Duramax engine runs well and for a long time. The frequency of oil changes depends on your mileage, but as a rule of thumb, you should change your oil every 5000-10,000 miles.
